Having first experienced life on Campus working at Mission Therapeutics, Rachel enjoyed the Campus environment and ethos so much she decided to pursue further opportunities here. We’re delighted to welcome her as our new Deputy LiveLabs Manager. Find out more about her career to date and what she’s looking forward to most in her new role.
Where most people have a clear path to their future career, mine was a serendipitous journey. After completing my A-Levels with no clear direction, I found myself circling job adverts in the local paper (pre-internet so giving away my age here!). It didn't take long to realise that most jobs in Cambridge were in science. My first step into the science field was as a Laboratory Technician at Spillers Milling in Cambridge, where I gained valuable experience in both the analytical and microbiology laboratories. I thoroughly enjoyed the role and was encouraged to pursue further education.
Through this, I made friends who worked in Biotechnology and decided that, should the opportunity arise, I would apply for a role in this sector. A few years later, I found myself working at Cantab Pharmaceuticals on the Cambridge Science Park in the Analytical Development department, and later at Astex Pharmaceuticals in the Biology department. I consider myself very fortunate to have worked alongside inspiring scientists who encouraged my personal development and were great mentors throughout my career.
During my time at Astex, I was encouraged to pursue a BSc degree, which I eventually earned through the Open University, followed by a Health and Safety qualification. After 16 years working on the Cambridge Science Park, I transitioned to Mission Therapeutics at the Babraham Research Campus (BRC). This role was primarily in assay development, but I also had responsibilities for health and safety and laboratory management.
I thoroughly enjoyed working on BRC, as it fosters a dynamic and collaborative environment at the forefront of life sciences research. Beyond the scientific excellence, the Campus is set in a beautiful natural environment that supports biodiversity, with protected green spaces and wildlife that enhance well-being and sustainability. I was keen to seek further opportunities at BRC, so I was delighted to be offered the position of Deputy LiveLabs Manager.
In my role as Deputy LiveLabs Manager, I’m most looking forward to contributing to the continued success of the research environment at BRC. I’m excited to work closely with the LiveLabs team and companies in LiveLabs ensuring a safe, collaborative, and dynamic setting for scientific discovery.
One of the most valuable advantages companies in LiveLabs can leverage is the opportunity to work in a highly dynamic, collaborative environment. The ability to network with experts across various disciplines is invaluable for fostering innovation.
My husband and I both enjoy rides on our motorbikes, and I love walking and trips to the seaside, so I would love to own a small B&B on the Norfolk coast (catering to bikers, of course).
